This half-day city tour of Ashgabat could be either in the morning or in the afternoon.
Morning Tour 09.00 – 13.00.
Start the tour by visiting the park and Monument of Independence - the profundity and essence of independence as a basic gain in the centuries, the old history of the Turkmens is reflected in the highest monumental structure of the country, having been erected on the central axis of the National park, extending its green splendor on a vast abandoned ground at the foothills.
Continue the tour on to the National Museum of History & Ethnography where a full collection of Turkmenistan’s most significant architectural finds, a large number of Ancient Turkmen carpets and rugs, examples of national dress and fabrics, traditional household equipment, musical instruments, weapons, jewelry, medals and historical documents are displayed. Next visit is the Arch of Neutrality, a 75 m-high (246ft) monument with a revolving golden statue of the first President Turkmenbashy.
Hit the viewing platform of the Arch of Neutrality to see the beautiful panorama of Ashgabat. Continue the tour to the “Alem” Ferris wheel, a panoramic tour to the “Bagt Koshgi” (wedding palace) and “Yildiz” Hotel - one of the city's top five-star luxury hotels, conveniently located at the foothills of the Kopetdag, which offers an excellent view of the city.
The tour ends at the “Gulistan” market (so-called "Russian bazaar") to experience a diverse oriental culture and get a feeling for local life. Naturally, an exotic Asian assortment from the Turkmen fields and vegetable gardens is on sale here. Melons pomegranates, grapes, dried fruits, and vegetables are sold all year round.
The tempting smell leads better than any guidebook to the fast food counters. Golden pastries are fried here, juicy manty are on sale, and a wonderful drink, camel chal (a fermented drink made of camel’s milk) is offered. A little further, the smoke over braziers indicates the place where fragrant mutton shish kebab is cooked. The rhythm of life at the market adds a positive tone to the human mood.
Afternoon Tour 14.00 – 18.00.
The afternoon Ashgabat city tour starts visiting the Ertogrul Gazi mosque. The mosque takes its inspiration from Ottoman architecture, as a symbol of the ties between Turkmenistan and Turkey, and offers more than a nod towards the design of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul.
Then cyclo ride tour around the Square of Revival (Galkynysh) at the intersection of two avenues - Turkmenbashi and Galkynysh, with an impressive monument in its center - a triumphal column crowned with the globe and presidential standard.
In the north-west corner of the square, you will see the white marbled with golden domes the Complex of Presidential Palace, the Ministry of Defence, the Turkmen State University named after Makhtumkuli on the eastern side, and the luxury "Nusai" hotel on the opposite side of the University.
Drive to the park and Monument of Independence along Turkmenbashy Avenue.
Visit the National Park and Monument of Independence. Next visit is the Arch of Neutrality, a 75 m-high (246ft) monument with a revolving golden statue of the first President Turkmenbashy. Hit the viewing platform of the Arch of Neutrality to see the beautiful panorama of Ashgabat. Continue the tour to the historical and archaeological site “Ancient Nisa – the Residence of Parthian Kingdom” UNESCO site from 2007.
Nisa is situated at the crossroads of important commercial and strategic axes. The archaeological remains vividly illustrate the significant interaction of cultural influences from Central Asia and the Mediterranean world. The Parthian Empire was one of the most powerful and influential civilizations of the ancient world and a brilliant rival of Rome which prevented the expansion of the Roman Empire to the east.
End the tour at your hotel.
