Visually, Nohur is unlike any other site found in Turkmenistan. Rich in history, nature, and tribal customs, Nohur is set 1,100 m above the Karakum Desert in the cool mountain valleys of southwestern Turkmenistan. The Nohur people have maintained a highly homogeneous society based on ancestral rights, and tribal customs. Varied images in the stunning silk embroideries sewn by local Nohur women, indicating their particular tribe, make Nohur silk renowned throughout the country. The Nohur felts are also thought to be exclusive to this region.

They differ from customary Turkmen felts with their original designs and Zoroastrian ornaments symbolising the worship of fire, and the cult of fertility. Constructing their homes from the stones found around the area, the Nohur people have decorated these simple homes with handcrafted wooden columns and capitals unique only to this clan of people.

Accented by two small flowing streams, the flora and fauna of this region is exceptional. There are mountain goats (umga and marhur), Urial mountain sheep, wolves, foxes, jackals, porcupines, and even snow leopards in these mountain ridges. See this ancient way of life uniquely preserved and rarely seen.

Full-Day Nohur Tour

Duration: 1 day (9-10 hours)

Pick up: hotel pick-up.

Tour Itinerary:

Morning pick-up at your hotel in Ashgabat. Transfer to Nohur - village in the western Kopetdag Mountains on 4x4 vehicles. Visit the Ahal-Teke private horse farm in Gokdepe on the way. In the private horse farm you can see the proud of Turkmens – national Akhal-teke horses. 5000 years ago Turkmens began to breed Akhalteke horses. Different rulers as Alexander the Great, Darius I wanted to own these horses. Continue driving to Nohur.

Arrive and lunch at a local family home in Nohur to experience the extraordinary culture enjoying the hospitality of locals. Visit the silk weaving home workshop and two fascinating sights in Nohur. One is the town’s cemetery, where each grave is protected by the huge horns of the mountain goats that locals consider sacred - indeed many houses in the village have a goat’s skull hanging on a stick outside to ward off evil spirits. Just beyond is the pilgrimage site of Kyz Bibi.

A fat-trunked plane tree, surrounded by a small metal fence, is covered with small scraps of cloth representing wishes. From here, a flight of concrete steps leads up to a tiny cave, just a few centimeters across, in the side of the hill. The cave is surrounded by more pieces of material, some of which have been fashioned into tiny cribs, suggesting the nature of the wishes made here.

After a sightseeing tour in Nohur return to the main road to Ashgabat. The tour ends at your hotel.
